What Do I Need for an Online Classroom?

Do you want to create an online classroom? The list of technology needs may seem daunting. Fortunately, VIPKID provides all the information you need to successfully launch a virtual classroom so you can welcome students with confidence and prepare for online instruction.

Welcome to My VIPKID Classroom!

VIPKID lists these Minimal System Requirements:

  • Operating System: Mac OS X 10.10 or above,Windows 7 or above

  • Central Processing Unit (CPU): Intel Core i3 or above CPU

  • Memory: Minimum 4GB RAM

  • Network: Stable Internet connection - 20Mbps (Ethernet recommended)

  • Flash Version: Download Latest Version

  • Minimum Browser Requirements: Google Chrome Version 58 or above

DEVICE

The most important thing you will need in your VIP classroom is a dependable laptop or desktop computer. I purchased my HP laptop in 2011. It does not matter if you own a Mac or personal computer (PC). Unfortunately, you cannot use a Chromebook to teach VIPKid classes. The VIPKid Teaching App is not supported with this device.

You can teach from an iPad after you are hired, but you will not be able to complete the interview or mock classes with one. (A mock class is the class you teach for your VIPKID interview).

You must also have reliable internet system within your home. VIPKID has a minimum requirement of 10mbps download speed and 2 mbps upload speed. Purchase an Ethernet cord like this one (they are available in most stores for less than $10). An Ethernet cord will increase the reliability of your connection when you use the VIPKID app. It also increases your bandwidth, there is low signal loss, and significantly increases the speed of your internet connection.

Logitech H600 Wireless Headset on Amazon.com

HEADSET

Use a headset with a microphone and stable output and input. Test your microphone and sound inside the VIPKid classroom by clicking “Settings.”

Earbud headphones are adequate as long as they have a microphone. You can purchase a good headset for as little as $12.00 at most stores. A Cellet Headset with a Boom Microphone is available on Amazon for $9.00. The Mpow Headset features a microphone noise cancelling control for about $20.00

If you want a headset that does not attach you to your computer with a cord, I recommend the Logitech H600 Wireless Headset (also available on Amazon). It is about $35.00, comfortable. They also have a on/off button to mute the device.

CAMERA

Most laptops have an HD External camera or HD integrated camera. If you are not satisfied with the quality of your computer's internal camera, you can purchase a webcam. A webcam is a digital camera that is connected to a computer. The Logitech HD Pro Webcam C920 is available on for about $60.00.

ETHERNET CABLE

An Ethernet cord plugs directly into your computer. It strengthens you internet connection. Remember you will teach children who live on the other side of the planet. You want a secure internet connection. If your laptop does not have a port for this, you can buy a USB adaptor like this one for less than $10.00.

GOOD LIGHTING

You always want your face to be well lit when you are teaching. Teaching in front of a window with natural light shining on your face is not always possible, so we use these bright white lights to simulate natural light.

Many teachers use a ring light because it catches light of your eyes while emitting even, diffused lighting that helps eliminate shadows. It is usually positioned in front of the subject, with the camera situated in the middle of the ring. You can get a ring light for as little as $13.00 that clips to the top of your computer. Or you can purchase a ring light kit with a stand on Amazon.

Like all materials for any work station, you can choose to invest to spend as much money as you want. I purchased a 3-way multi-head floor lamp with multi-color plastic shades on Amazon for about $30.00. I bought a six-pack of 100 watt LED light bulbs (1600 lumens) 5000K daylight bulbs. The bulbs emit a cool light. If your skin is pale like mine, warm light will make your image on the screen look yellow. I only turn on 3 of the bulbs and have plenty of classroom light. I use coffee filters to help soften the light.

Your VIPKID Classroom

You don't need to spend a lot of money to equip your VIPKID classroom. My first classroom was in the diningroom. I made my first purchase at The Salvation Army. I bought eight stuffed animals who needed a little love. Now they have a home in my virtual classroom.

There are many different VIPKID Facebook groups where you can find support, resources, and tons of ideas. My two favorite Facebook groups include the VIPKID Online Teachers' Lounge (administrators include Clay Edwards, Jordan Grant, and Christy Powell. Paula Gross and I, Julie Ann Connor, are moderators). Also check out the wonderful resources at VIPKID Videos and Props (founded by Jennifer Anderson).

There are many wonderful videos available on YouTube. Don't forget to go to the VIPKID library for videos, resources, and flashcards.

Would YOU like to be a VIPKID teacher? Curious? Or are you asking, "When can I start?"
